Celebrate the beginning of the days of increasing light at the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival in Vancouver with family, friends and your community. Bring a lantern and join the procession from the Strathcona Community Centre to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden and enjoy an evening of entertainment.
When:
The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival is held on December 21, which is the day on which the Winter Solstice occurs.
Location:
The Strathcona Lantern Festival has two components, the procession and the Chinese Garden entertainment. At 6:00 p.m. there will be a procession leaving the Strathcona Community Centre, which will arrive at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden by about 7:00 p.m. where there will be more entertainment until 10:00 p.m.

Winter Solstice is the moment when the earth’s axial tilt is farthest away from the sun, and in the northern hemisphere, this moment occurs on December 21. The result is the day which has the fewest daylight hours of the year. The Winter Solstice Lantern Festival is a way of getting out to share the days of increasing daylight with family, friends, and the community.
Celebrate the Chinese winter solstice, dong zhi, which marks the rebirth of the yang qualities of light and energy. See enchanting displays of hand-made lanterns by artists Joey Mallett and Carmen Rosen, with hundreds of community-built tree lanterns and a giant Chinese lantern created by Craig Stewart. Explore the Children’s Lantern Courtyard featuring lanterns made by young hands, or view a stunning collection of antique hand-painted lanterns in the Scholar’s Study. Enjoy a choral performance by The Real Treble Makers and have your spirits raised with the Slavic soul of Balkan and Ukrainian quintet Zeellia. Treat yourself to hot tea and fresh warm buns baked right in the Garden by Bonchaz!
Stroll the nighttime paths of this beautiful park and be dazzled by hundreds of hand-made lanterns by amazing lantern artists Yoko Tomita, Matt Pearson and Nels Holm, and let yourself be enveloped in the environmental jazz of Graham Ord and Paul Blaney. Source: secretlantern.org
