Activity/Description:

Cycling around the seawall in Vancouver.

Location:

Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia.

Useful Information:

Description:

Stanley Park is a very large and beautiful city park. Within the park, there is an aquarium, water park, and gardens, to name just a few of the attractions. There are trails that wind throughout the park, and a pedestrian/cycling/rollerblading path which is built on the seawall that traces the perimeter of the park. Cycling around the seawall is fairly easy, since the path doesn’t have many hills. The seawall path is 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) and provides some amazing scenery for a relatively leisurely bike ride.

The seawall is a shared use path, but it is divided into a pedestrian section and a bicycle and rollerblade section. There is no established direction of travel for the pedestrian section, however, the bicycle/rollerblade section is marked as being one way for most of the path. Stanley Park is a popular tourist destination, and as a result, the seawall can become very crowded during the sunnier times of the year. During the busier times, it is best to approach a bicycle ride around the seawall in a very leisurely manner. If you want to avoid the crowds, then arriving early or late in the day will help. Even during busier times, you should be able to ride around the park within about an hour.

Cost:

Free, if bringing your own bike. If you are renting a bike, then a quick search will reveal several rental companies within riding distance to the park. You should expect to spend $10.00 or more per person on a bike rental, with the prices varying based on the rental store, length of rental and type of bicycle being rented.

Geographical Information:

Coordinates:

The approximate geographic centre of Stanley Park is located at 49°18′18.65″N and 123°08′43.33″ W

Altitude:

Since it borders the ocean, the perimeter of Stanley Park is at sea level, and the highest point of the park is approximately 79 meters (260 feet) above seal level, although the seawall has no significant grade.

Map:

The marker on this map indicates the best place to start a ride around the seawall, and your ride would go in a counter clockwise direction around the park. The Vancouver Park Board website has information on how to get to the park.
